Focusing specifically on Hindi and Tamil speaking audiences which number in the 100s of millions, Talking Yak was built to address their distinct language-learning needs and preferences. Most global language apps are designed for English speakers learning other languages, not for native Hindi or Tamil speakers trying to learn English. This created both challenges and opportunities.
Talking Yak came to us with a clear vision of what users needed to learn: grammar, conversation, phonics, vocabulary, and speech. However, key questions remained about how users would navigate these lessons, how progress would be tracked, how new content would unlock after assessments, and how to prevent the most common issue in language apps: user drop-off as difficulty increases.
We created a dynamic, immersive environment that guides users through a rewarding learning journey. One that keeps them engaged, motivated, and progressing consistently.
Striking a balance between rich visual storytelling and simplicity, we structured the lessons as a journey across India, beginning in the north and gradually moving south. Subtle, evolving backgrounds reflect the cities along the way, while a progression of brighter colours symbolises movement toward clarity and enlightenment. Users begin each trail with access to an initial set of exercises, unlocking subsequent lessons as they progress and earning rewards along the way. The experience continuously encourages advancement through level-based challenges, helping maintain momentum and long-term engagement. At the same time, the app adapts to each learner, reinforcing difficult concepts by offering additional, targeted practice where it’s needed most.
Talking Yak’s partnership with Lucid has spanned several years, most recently culminating in its second major update. With the introduction of an AI-powered assistant, real-life learning scenarios, achievements and leaderboard systems, and a refreshed visual identity, the app is now strongly positioned for continued growth and wider adoption.
